On Hilton Head the first golf course opened in Sea Pines in 1961, and other new courses in Port Royal Plantation and Palmetto Dunes followed shortly thereafter. Today there exists an abundance of championship golf courses located on Hilton Head Island and in the Bluffton area, with an equal number open for play in nearby communities such as Beaufort, Callawassie and other coastal areas.
